Indian Consumers Embrace Plant-Based Foods in 2024
In a notable culinary shift, Indian consumers are increasingly turning to plant-based dishes, reflecting a growing trend towards meatless diets. Corporate Executive Chef Rakesh Sethi of Radisson Hotel Group predicts a significant surge in the incorporation of plant-based meat and other protein alternatives into fine dining menus this year.
Sethi highlights that protein alternatives are becoming increasingly prevalent in Indian cuisine, aligning with a global movement towards plant-based diets. This shift is reinforced by Veganuary India's expectation of record participation in its 2024 campaign, supported by a survey revealing strong consumer beliefs in the feasibility of a vegan lifestyle.
According to Veganuary India, 70% of Indian consumers see the country's tradition of vegetarianism as a catalyst for the growth of veganism, while 62% find the vegan lifestyle easy to maintain, and 61% believe there are sufficient vegan food options available. Moreover, a report by India’s Plant Based Foods Industry Association (PBFIA) indicates a noticeable increase in plant-based eating, with motivations ranging from animal welfare concerns to environmental sustainability and perceived health benefits.
The PBFIA has forecasted "explosive growth" for the Indian plant-based sector and has laid out ambitious plans to position the country as a leading global supplier of plant protein ingredients. Executive Director Mr. Sanjay Sethi emphasizes the industry's pivotal moment, calling for integrity, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to creating a sustainable food system for both the planet and its people.
The embrace of plant-based foods by Indian consumers marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and ethical approach to food consumption, underscoring the evolving landscape of dietary preferences in the nation.
